Arboreto

The experimental reforestation in Sant’Antonino, whose beginnings date back to 1956, cover an area of ​​29 hectares. They have the aim of verifying the ability of different tree species to integrate into the Ticino environment and their suitability for use in the chestnut area for the production of valuable wood (work timber). The project is supported by the Canton of Ticino, the Confederation and the Federal Institute for Forest Research.

71 forest species have been planted, including 49 exotic species and 22 indigenous species. Due to the remarkable growth rates, the excellent qualitative characteristics of the trunks and the good overall vitality, the most interesting species for the forestry of the chestnut area are:

Indigenous species:  Mountain Maple, Wild Cherry, Farnia and Oak, Curly Lime, European Larch,  Scots pine

Exotic species: North America, Atlantic side: Red Oak, Liriodentdro, Pino Strobo

                         North America, Pacific Ocean coast: Douglasia, 

                         Central Japan: Japanese larch

                         Corsica: Black Pine
