Last Line of Defence

The Lona Line, a fortification work in the Ticino valley between the towns of Lodrino and Osogna, was designed in 1938 as part of the new fortifications of the Canton of Ticino. The structure takes its name “LONA” from the initial letters of Lodrino and the final letters of Osogna. The location was chosen due to the morphology of the Ticino valley, which at this point has a narrow valley floor, while the mountain sides are steep. The LONA barrier should have made it possible to stop the advance of enemy troops from the south towards the Lukmanier and San Gottardo passes.
