This ride goes from the main road east of St Arnaud through the Rainbow Station. This is a private road and only open during specific times during the summer.
It is controlled by a Toll Gate (usually a couple of older guys who take your money, get you to sign a waiver and offer to sell you manuka honey. They even open the gate for you. ) The road follows up to the head of the Wairau River then crosses a saddle to the head of the Clarence River, finally descending to Hanmer, a holiday resort with natural hot pools for your end of ride pleasure.
