During the last ice age, when the Kandersteg valley was covered with a glacial tongue, there was a mountain avalanche which sent ice, huge rocks and stones into the valley. When the ice began to melt several great holes and valleys were revealed. Many of these were evened out by streams and rivers but others are still in existence - as is the Blue Lake. Blausee is not filled by the Kander river which runs nearby. The water in- and out flows are underground. The water level varies only very slightly. The water temperature is never above 10 degrees centigrade in summer and is constant at 6 degrees centigrade in winter which prevents the lake from freezing over. The beautiful, unusual colour comes from the clear, mineral rich water and since only the blue spectrum of light is absorbed the lake has a azure blue colour.
