Jokulsargljufur is the largest and most spectacular canyon in Iceland. It is 25 km long, about 500 m wide, and its depth comes close to or exceeds 100 m in many places. The canyon is believed to have been formed by catastrophic flooding in the glacial river Jokulsa, which originated on the northern side of Vatnajokull glacier after the last glacial period. There are several waterfalls in Jokulsargljufur. The southernmost of them is Selfoss, about 1 km south of the great Dettifoss. The west side of Jokulsargljufur was declared a National Park in 1973.
