Köpfchen-Rundweg

This route leads around the old Köpfchen border station, named after the small elevation that has to be overcome on the way from Aachen to the border. The leisurely stroll offers a varied landscape with forests and views of the meadows and hedges of the Eupen Butterland. Hidden in the forest are testimonies to the history of the border: the path leads through the middle of the former Siegfried Line, which was supposed to secure the border between Germany and Belgium. Today overgrown with moss, the cusp line made of reinforced concrete is easy to walk through and fulfills a peaceful function as an ecological niche. On the way, gnarled beech rows trace the course of the ditch. They are a remnant of the Aachen city fortifications, which was secured by an overgrown hedge. The hedge has not been cut for around 100 years, the trees fell and formed the harp shapes that often seem bizarre today. The border doesn't care much for the Cyclops stones that have rested here for millions of years. Scientifically speaking, they come from a time when the border was on the sandy beach of the Chalk Sea.
