Lake Montorfano (in the province of Como) takes its name from Mount Orfano (554 m) which, alone, overlooks the area.
The lake, which has a rounded shape and dates back to the last glaciation, was included in the nature reserve to safeguard the lake's environmental specificities.
It is nicknamed the "lake of fairy tales" for the legend that accompanies its formation. The legend says that the small mountain, realizing that it was alone and isolated, became inconsolable, crying desperately every night. His tears formed the lake but in this way Monte Orfano was able to reflect itself in the waters of the lake basin and, seeing other reliefs similar to itself, he felt less alone.
