The ruin of the medieval castle Eppenstein was built around 1000 AD and lost importance around 1500, passing many hands in between and slowly decaying afterwards. Being militarily invincible in those days, it was conquered but once - through treason. Nowadays, a local group of people (details in German), which is trying to preserve it, is doing a fascinating job. Interestingly enough, the flag of the family who built it was a red-white-red one, which - in a complex sequence of inheritance - in the end came to be the basis of the Austrian flag!
Details of the castle history, in German, can be found on specialized pages.
Join me on the stairways to many fortification levels, up to the final vistas from the top. You will see the essence of the castle in this video. But, there is also a longer video "Eppenstein 🚶 Loop" in which you can get a feeling for the valley and castle's historic strategic position.
