The ruins of the Serravalle castle, one of the most important medieval fortresses in Italian-speaking Switzerland, stand on a rocky promontory in the Blenio Valley. Situated in a dominant position along the via del Passo del Lucomagno, the complex carried out mainly residential and administrative functions.
Recent archaeological excavations have brought to light wall structures belonging to a first castle built in the 10th century and destroyed in 1180. The ruins visible today belong to the second fortress, attested in 1224 and definitively demolished in 1402. South of the fortress is the church of S. Maria del Castello, mentioned for the first time in 1329.
