Napoleonic militias

In a treaty concluded in 1803, France obliged Switzerland to provide Napoleon Bonaparte with a contingent of 16,000 soldiers, of which 600 from the canton of Ticino. The tradition follows a vow made by people from Blenio valley who took part in the Russian campaign with Napoleon's armies. They promised that if they were saved, they would honour their patron saint by establishing a symbolic “Napolenic militias” army. On the way you reach the 11th Century Negrentino Romanesque church of San Carlo. It is indeed one of the most remarkable in Ticino, renowned thanks to its architectural layout as well as its precious Romanesque and late-Gothic frescoes.
