Leac a Li to Fionnsbhagh, Outer Hebrides

Leac a Li to Fionnsbhagh

We spent a week on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland recently and I managed to get out cycling on two of the seven days.  The weather was not great - whilst the rest of the UK was basking in blue skies with temperatures in the mid to high twenties, Harris was grey and cloudy and just 13c. But at least it was dry.

This video was meant to cover a circular route of the whole island however I suffered a corruption of the memory card in my GoPro camera and ended up having to split the video into three. The gaps between the videos are actually small but they would have been noticeable. The two videos that get you to the start of this one are here and here, or you can follow all three via this playlist...

The landscape on the West of the Isle of Harris is completely different from that of the East. Most of the tourist traffic heads to the beautiful beaches on the West coast., The East coast however is very rocky and indeed the barren landscapes stood in for the planet Jupiter in Stanley Kubrick's 2001 Space Oddesy film.

This video takes you from the junction of the main road through Haris the A859 towards Leac a Li and then South East to complete the East coast part of the journey.  I've used the Gaelic place names in these videos as actually, that's all that is listed on 99% of the road signs. Most of the roads in Harris are single track roads with passing places and it's very cycling friendly with the majority of drivers giving you plenty of space.  I stopped the video at Fionnsbhagh (Finsbay) as the rest of the route back to the finish in An T-Òb (Leverburgh) i have already covered in another video here.
