The Posbank

The Herikhuizerveld is a hilly heathland area that is part of the Veluwezoom National Park in the municipality of Rheden in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is owned by Natuurmonumenten. The area is named after the nearby former farm Herikhuizen. It is also called the Posbank, after the monument that stands on a hill on the northeast side of it. The Herikhuizerveld is grazed by Icelandic ponies and Veluwe heath sheep. The sheepfold of the latter is located on the adjacent Heuven estate. Boar and deer are also found in the area. The grazing management helps to ensure that the heathland does not overgrow with grass and trees. A shrub that is common here in some places is the Gorse, a thorny plant. The evergreen leguminous, which blooms in the winter months, is quite rare in the Netherlands.
