Springtime Road Cycling in Lavanttal - Gemmersdorf to Lavamünd 🌞😎🚴♂️
A springtime road cycling tour in the cycling paradise Lavanttal (Lavant Valley). Located south of the alps, Lavanttal is a lovely sunny valley, nestled between the Koralpe and Saualpe Mountains. The river Lavant winds its way down from its source on the slopes of the Zirbitzkogel, through pretty towns and villages before joining the Drau at Lavamünd. This scenic road cycling ride begins in Gemmersdorf and takes you along Gemmersdorfer Landesstrasse L143. You can see the Petzen mountain, still blanketed in snow, in the distance. We cycle through the villages Sankt Georgen, Matschenbloch, Niederhof, Schwarzenbach and Ettendorf before descending to the river Lavant, then ascending on the only real climb of the ride, through Plestätten to join the Sankt Pauler Landesstrasse L135. From here we have a steep descent to the beautiful town of Lavamünd along the B80. Lavamünd is where the river Lavant joins the river Drau - hence its name Lavamünd (Lavant mouth in English).
In Lavamünd you can see an incredible Hydro Power plant, the oldest pier power plant in Austria. Built between 1941 and 1944, hundreds of workers were needed, including many prisoners of war from the Stalag 18A (Work Camp 10030GW) based at Pudlach, near Lavamünd). These included prisoners from Poland, Belgium, France and the UK, Australia, New Zealand and more. It is well worth a visit if you are in this beautiful area.
