Men's Elite Road Race, UCI Cycling World Championships, Glasgow 2023 (Video 5a of 6)

I'm incredibly lucky that the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships are based in Glasgow and even luckier that the Men's Elite Road Race passes the end of the road where I live on Sunday 6th August. Much of the route I have already cycled and filmed and is available here on Kinomap, but I decided to film these again as close to the race as possible. The Scottish government is investing over £300m in repairing the roads that the UCI competitors will be using in the championships.

The Men's Elite Road Race covers 271km between Edinburgh and Glasgow finishing with 10 laps of a 14km route through Glasgow's City Centre.  Some of the route I cannot film as it is over roads that will be closed for the race but which cyclists are not allowed on normally - e.g. the new Queensferry Crossing over the River Forth.

This video (#5a) covers the route from the end of the Carron Valley up over the famous Crow Road hill climb - the only real climb of the whole route. The road was officially closed on the day I filmed however the maintenance workers allowed me to pass which meant I got to ride the route in the knowledge there was no traffic and also with the surface exactly as the elite cyclists will experience.

My original plan was to film this part of the route as one ride all the way into Glasgow City centre but unfortunately, there was one small section (about 1km) that I could not film and hence this video ended up being split into 5a and 5b. 

The whole route is 271km, far too long for my old legs to do all in one go (and also too long for my old GoPro camera to film!) so I have divided the route up into six 'small' chunks that I could cycle and film as follows: 

• Video 1 : The start in Edinburgh outside the Scottish Parliament to the Queensferry Crossing over the River Forth
• Video 2 : The Queensferry Crossing to Clackmannanshire Bridge
• Video 3 : Clackmannanshire Bridge to the Falkirk Wheel
• Video 4 : The Carron Valley
• Video 5 : The Crow Road hill climb to Torrance (this video)
• Video 6 : Torrance to Glasgow City Centre
• Video 7 : The Glasgow city centre street circuit to the finish (coming soon)
