The Verzasca valley dam was begun in 1960 and completed in 1965, it is 220m high and 380m wide.
During the winter of 2021/2 the artificial lake was drained to allow for overhaul works. The volume of water removed is approximately 85 million cubic meters.
Thus the places where people lived re-emerge. The old road at the bottom of the valley is still visible, in an environment that has become "lunar".
