The Bedretto valley occupies the upper part of the Ticino river and extends from the Novena Pass and Airolo. It is enclosed between two mountain ranges whose peaks reach 3'000 meters.
An interesting detail of the glacier area of Val Bedretto is the imposing peak, the Witenwasserenstok, which forms the border between three Cantons (Uri, Valais and Ticino); from its summit a drop of water can end in three different seas: in the Mediterranean via the Rhone river, in the Adriatic via the Po or in the North Sea via the Rhine.
About one hundred soapstone deposits have been identified in the Canton of Ticino. In one of these, the Pigne quarry (2'278 m), the slabs were obtained for the construction of the famous pine cones, ancient stoves able to very slowly release the accumulated heat and allow an effective and lasting heating of the environment.
