Sunny spring track through the Fort of Steendorp and apple trees in blossom. The Fort of Steendorp, situated in the Antwerp fortification belt, has a rich history. Constructed between 1882 and 1892, it stands as Belgium’s last brick-built fortress. Originally named Fort Rupelmonde, it served various purposes over time: from a military factory for war gases to an army training ground. Today, the fort has found a new role as a bat reserve, housing over 1200 bat specimens. Its trapezoidal design and dry moat make it unique among Antwerp’s forts. Although not permanently accessible, a walking path encircles its outer walls, allowing visitors to explore its fascinating past and natural surroundings
